AdjunctMatters.org

AdjunctMatters.org is the official site of the Associate Faculty Advisory Board (AFAB) at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).

The mission of the AFAB is to improve working conditions and the culture for adjunct faculty at IUPUI. The purpose of AdjunctMatters.org is two-fold: to communicate our efforts to a national audience and to serve as a forum to share teaching tips, activities and classroom techniques among adjuncts across the country and across disciplines.

Spring 2010 Teach-In

The Associate Faculty Advisory Board is organizing a Teach-in for April 5-8, 2010.

The goal of the Teach-in is to raise awareness of issues faced by part-time faculty, including low pay, no benefits, lack of appropriate working space, lack of adequate professional development opportunities, exclusion from department and university governance, and more. In addition, facts about the number of part-time faculty and the courses they teach will be highlighted. The Teach-in will be held in the School of Liberal Arts, where part-time faculty teach nearly 50% of all first-year classes that are attended by 6,000 students each semester.

A mini-documentary shot by part-time faculty in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI is available on YouTube.

Teach-ins, popular in the 1960s, are held in universities to bring students and faculty together (in some cases, the outside community, as well) to learn about a complicated or controversial issue. They are oriented toward action and activism. If you have questions, contact Tracy Donhardt, President of the Associate Faculty Advisory Board, at adjfac@iupui.edu or 317-362-5592.
